I have the most recent Feed-the-beast DW20 modpack.
It might not be a random direction, but it's unpredictable. Sometimes it faces the turtle that placed it, somtimes other direction. If you don't move the placer-turtle, it always place the turtle facing the same direction, but that deriction somehow depends on position of the placer.
Oh, also it's not always North. I found the massage that's saying that it's fixed in 1.51, but I'm not sure if it's the same bug. I can't remember, what version of CC in the most recent Direwolf's modpack... Sorry, if it is already fixed.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Place down a turtle (tested with a wireless mining turtle. It had a label, btw).
2. Put a turtle into the selected slot.
3. Run turtle.place() command.
