So far I have been coding in game, on a computer or turtle, but I want to start working outside of Minecraft! Can anybody recommend a good lua ide?

Sublime Text 2. It's not an IDE, but lot of people including myself love it, and there's even a CC plugin for it.

@OP Make sure that you install the Auto-Lua Syntax made by NeverCast that GravityScore also links in the OP of his plugin. It is very handy.

I've been working on ZeroBrane Studio, a lightweight Lua IDE that some people described as very easy to use. You may want to give it a try: http://studio.zerobrane.com/

I just use word pad it suites the purpose
