Are there any plans to update to Lua 5.2? It would be nice to have __len, but I know you wouldn't want to make an update like that for just one feature...

Hell no.
Actual reason:
Lua 5.2 is a very compatability breaking update. It would make lots of scripts stop working - and we don't want that.
