I want to make a peripheral similar to the monitors that are already in the mod. Rather than trying to rewrite all the code from that peripheral, is there any way to use parts of the code (e.g. writing text to the screen, joining multiple monitors together, etc.)?

No. CC is not open source, so you can't reuse the code like in buildcraft.
