I think ender modems are too much owerpowred.
What should be done with them:
1) Remove them
2) Smaller distance
3) More expensive crafting recepie

I would not be surprised at all if you could disable them in the config. The whole point of them is the extreme range. Tools like Minetweaker should allow you to set a custom recipe.

The problem is that removing the long range defeats the purpose of Ender Modems entirely, and making them more expensive doesn't make that much sense to me.

5) give out sender world id or name instead of range

Or maybe it can only send messages to another dimension, and the receiving modem has to be in the same location as the sending one (but in the other dimension) so for example: ow: x=16 nether: x=2. because wy would you build sattelite networks if you can just have one ender modem. (keep the survival guys in mind too)
