Mad Dash!

You're not going to win this. The last times this was run had 9 and 19 winners, meaning your chances of winning are roughly 11%. This probability is reduced even further if you are asleep when this competition draws to a close. History shows that the victor posts within seconds of this event finishing and multiple times in the last minute. Can you provide and justify that level of dedication?
There are several experiments which prove that people given good news (such as "I'm going to win this") and then having that good news withdrawn ("oh, someone else has posted") leaves the person in a more depressed state then before (the inverse is also true, salesmen often do this). Follow this through, it would be logical to state that competing in the mad dash is detrimental to your general well being.
Also, in your fervour to win, you will inevitably be checking the forums compulsively, to see if you are still ahead. Needless to say this will have a negative effect on your concentration. As finals draw nearer (well, in the UK anyway), you can hardly afford to loose valuable revision time focusing on a meaningless forum game. Furthermore this incessant checking will induce an irrational worry that someone might beat you.
The logical conclusion to this is not to compete in this competition. We must show our resolve and refuse to fight in this shameless battle that puts friend against friend. We will not be drawn into this trap, that takes everything and give nothing back. We will not post!
I'm not being serious, but it was worth a try />.

While I acknowledge you're not being "serious", the idea that anyone would post "competitively" any time other than within the last ~10 seconds before post closure is stretching things a bit. Checking before that time frame, it's pretty much a given that someone's going to jump in before the end. Checking within it, you're wasting time that could be spent spamming more posts of your own.
Really though, it seems to me that the thread may as well only be open for that last minute. Or half minute. Whatever.
