I don't remember if I needed a plugin or not to use battery boxes etc as peripherals. I hooked up a wired modem to my MFE, but when I right-click to connect it, nothing happens. I know I'm using the experimental version (1.8 pr0), but I really hope I can get this to work.

In general, ComputerCraft doesn't support third-party blocks. I believe support for this would be added by OpenPeripheral. I doubt you'll find a version of that for MC 1.9.4+.
Note that CC 1.8pr0 isn't intended for "playing" with. It's a pre-release package meant for testing, as is far from fully functional.
