How would I get a turtle to get an item out of a chance? I know that you'd have to use buildcraft, but can somebody give me an example of how that would work?

Just wait for 1.4 please. Then you can send stuff to the chests. Then the turtle can get it

use a transposer from redpower, it's better, or even a filter. if you prefer buildcraft use a wooden pipe and give it engine power (place a redstone engine next to it and give that power), it will pipe out items into another chest, turtles are considered chests so you can pipe items into them, the problem is you have to only pipe items out if a turtle is there or divert them somewhere else if there is no turtle, that can be a little more complicated but it is also possible, pm me if you have any further queries
