Since my last message was removed on this topic I'm creating a new one. I want to form a community OS on my server NOT on github. Git would be too messy. Before deleting my message at least tell me why. When you sign up for it DO NOT spam me, it was completely childish and obnoxious..

When you're asking people to spend time on something, it's useful to provide as much information as possible. You've effectively got to write a sales pitch: what's special about this project, what will it do, ect...

I'd also suggest reading some of the other "make an OS together" threads, so you don't fall into the same pitfalls.

I understand it but the way it was one before, it was a failure then, I will be hosting this on my server which will be open to the public very, very soon.

You are not understanding, on the games server. Players can come on and work on the computers themselves OR send their code and i will manually add it to the computers via ftp.

It sounds like the answer is "none" which is a terrible way to do any project, especially one with multiple people.

Wait, so if you want to work on the project you have to use signs to make a todo board, be on when other devs are on the server to talk or use signs to communicate, and edit a book and quill to make a documentation of the apis you are writing? Also you have to wait for the admin to upload the scripts wrote, forcing everybody else to request the whole data of the project to work on it instead of on the old version. That doesn't sound very fun. Sorry, but git is a lifesaver when working with groups.

Since nobody is being that guy, I will do it for all the rest of us: Put your server pitch into the servers topic and only if it is online and joinable. This is again the wrong section. IMO this entire project seems like a really bad idea. Versioning a software is a pretty simple task, coordinating a group of people to work towards one goal is very difficult, and the way you described your versioning workflow you've failed at the easier task already. Understanding the intent of other developers is challenging, and even more so when team members are leaving and joining the team, causing massive knowledge loss. Also to me (and I consider myself an advanced CC player as I develop software as part of my full-time job), the way you present yourself actually scares me away. I think there are more people having the same reaction to your posts.

But, to end on a good note, feel free to prove me wrong by creating an OS topic in 2-3 months in the forums presenting your community OS. I'd be happily surprised that you've managed it, but sadly, right now I really think this entire thing is going to blow in early stage.

On Topic: I don't know why the idea of a community OS has popped up so often recently, however, as was already pointed out, each of these projects lacked a clear definition of their goals or these goals were already achieved by other OS.

You still haven't told us why you need to make another OS. What should it do better than what's already out there?(Remember: We already got 300 OS and yours needs to be unique for people to use it)
Also "form[ing the] community OS on my Server" really leaves a lot of room for interpretation and does not clearly show how you plan on organizing the collaboration on the OS.

While I agree that making another OS is pointless, I'll make the point I made when squid brought up this same point:

It isn't REALLY pointless, if you're having fun making it. Games in general are pointless, as they don't advance humanity in any true way, so why play them? Because it brings us joy. We could all sit around working all day and making money and bettering ourselves, but in the end up of it, fun is fun, so let people have it.

as they've mentioned, playing games in general is pointless. its just for fun. if you dont want to partake in it then dont post and stay out of it... not to be rude but you did come on here with the intent of possibly stopping this @Lucas_S

He didn't. He expressed his concerns regarding the project, though the argument of not having an original useful product at the end doesn't hold, as it's about the journey to get there as pointed out by others already.
The rest is still there.

I'd just be interested to know, how many people are now already involved in the project and if there's been some traction already? Is it still everything copy/paste and FTP and all that?

It is, and if you're having fun then nothing else really matters. I would however argue that it's more fun and satisfying writing something that other people go "oh, this is cool" or "I'll use this".

I'm definitely not arguing about an operating system per-say, but rather suggesting that people sit down and think about features they've always wanted to see, something which will make other people sit up, pay attention to the project, and even contribute themselves. This is especially key if you're working on a Community OS: there should be some common goal everyone is striving towards, rather than it just being a learning experience.
