I'm running a modded 1.12.2 with BuildCraft, ComputerCraft and a few other mods, I'm wondering how I could read power data from BuildCraft blocks.

you can't unless you find a mod to add an API for it, or another block that will measure it for you, which you could then most likely read from with a computer.

Plethora is the open peripherals of 1.12.2 you might want to try that.

on the version of buldcraftfor 1.12.2 that I've tried I didn't get power to work. I assume that power not working could be related to why plethora can't read the energy information.

Recent versions of BuildCraft no longer use RF/FE and so are not compatible with most other mods. I suspect I'd have to add explicit support to Plethora, and nobody has asked about it yet. Though probably a little off topic for the original post, sorry!
