I have looked nearly everywhere for a tutorial on how to correctly use the http api. When I use http.get() on a pastebin It returns the entire html document of the webpage, not just the text I need. Any suggestions?

If http is enabled in config do:
pastebin get haya5a nameOnComputer

haya5a is the part after pastebin.com/
