Can I get a tutorial on the String API?

The Lua documentation is so hard to read. Can someone describe the most useful functions of the String API in everyday language, and perhaps a few examples? Thanks.

the tutorials section of the forums is not so bad, failing that the Lua users wiki (root of above link) and Lua 5.1 reference manual are great places to find help. I rarely find anything they cannot explain
