#64714 [1.48] Windows 8?

Try installing your Minecraft and Minecraft forge again. Can't see anything we are doing that is causing that.

It starts up now, haven't tested it yet though. I'm hoping to get redpower fixed as well, because that still crashes.

? I thought you have windows 8 lol

I do, if you want I can screenshot my desktop where it says windows 8 Pro build 9200 in the corner. I don't know why it says windows 7.

ForgeModLoader log please.

I had to run it again since I tried other mods. Redpower Core works, though control doesn't.
The log:

#64453 [1.48] Windows 8?

Posted by Zalerinian on 26 December 2012 - 12:37 PM in Bugs

Well, i haven't been here for a while. I haven't played minecraft for quite a few months, and now that I'm playing a bit again I want to play computercraft. Unfortunately, when I try to run the mod after getting forge installed, it crashes at startup. The wonderful people over at mojang have made the client produce this lovely little crash log that i'm told to give to anyone that i report the crash to. So my question is whether or not it is crashing because I'm using windows 8, or because theres a bug in the system?

---- Minecraft Crash Report ----
// Quite honestly, I wouldn't worry myself about that.

#31594 where to edit to make an OS

the title is pretty self axplanitory but anyways what file in the luarom folder do i edit if im making an OS

that depends. Is it for one user, or a server wide one that will overwrite the original CraftOS?

I'd recommend single-computer Operating Systems, because it allows people to use what they want. However, OS' (OSs, OSes?) that overwrite the Shell and possibly Bios files give more possibilities. For an OS the overwrite Shell or Bios... you edit the Shell and Bios files, and then add your own custom folders/files.
For operating systems that require an installation per computer, you can just make a folder, call it OS, the name of the operating system, System, or whatever you wish. You just need the startup file to boot your OS. the startup file is also usually the login file.

#29890 Computer server for doors, and lights within computer craft

Sorry if i posted this in the wrong place, this is my first post. Anyway, I have been trying to get this to work for some time now, but I cant completely figure it out. I would like to somehow make a server within the game so i could go on any computer in my house, and access the network. I am looking to have the server control all the doors, and lights, so I could go up to any console, and turn on the lights, doors, ect. I think wireless redstone would work, but I am unsure of how to write a program to tell all the other computers to look on the server, and which door/light to power. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Well, Computercraft comes shipped with a form of the internet, rednet. It allows connections between computers and turtles that have modems attached to them. Only wireless turtles can access the rednet, and not normal/mining/farming/etc. turtles. Computers need to have modems attached to any of the sides, which can be done by pressing your sneak key, and then the key to place blocks.

A few notes:
  • You must use rednet.open() before you can use the network, with the side that the modem is connected to inside the parenthesis. Possible values are: Top, Bottom, Left, Right, Front, Back.
  • rednet.receive() will stop after one message. To make the program listen indefinitely, you need to make it into a loop, such as a while loop.
  • rednet.send() uses two variables, the first of which is the computer ID of the computer to get the signal, and is a number. This should not be in quotations ( " " ), but instead a plain number. For Example: rednet.send(3, "Hello computer three!"). This sends the computer with the ID of three the message.
  • rednet.send returns a value of true or false, saying as to whether or not the message was sent. Having a message sent does NO mean that it was received. Possible errors that could make messages not received are that the receiving computer is not listening for messages, or it is not in range, or the modem is not open.

#29887 How to combine things in "write()"

How to combine this code into one statement?

write("nCancellation For ") write(formalname1) write(" Successful!")

I don't really want to have to type write that many times.. And with textutils.slowPrint(), it doesn't work very well at all either. Any help? And can someone explain it as well for textutils.slowPrint()?

Thanks.

As well as what Omega said, you could have this:

write("nCancellation For "..formalname1.." Successful!")

The only difference really is it saves you the use of another variable.

#29886 {Lua} How do I delete programs from different computers?

How do I delete ProgramA, on computer 1, from computer 2, with use on floppy disks?

You cannot remotely delete a program off a computer, unless you have a server running that accepts remote commands. If you're going to be putting in a floppy disk, however, and all it is to do with no function or confirmation and just delete a file/folder, then make a file named startup on the disk, and have the following in it:

fs.delete("Path/to/ProgramA")

I hope you're not planning anything malicious.

So, before I get onto the code, I must say, I am currently, and for a while, away from a omputer, both irl and cc. I wrote this a second ago, while reading an issue in my email that users wanted to type the password for a lock on the same line as the prompt. Would the following do that?

print("Written in DroidEditor")
term.clear()
term.setCursorPos(1,1)
print("Password: ")
term.setCursorPos(1,12)
pw = read("*")
if pw ~= "computer" then
print("Incorrect Password")
sleep(1)
shell.run("startup")
else
print("Password accepted")
sleep(2)
os.reboot()
end

I understand that it just prints depending on input, but will input still be on line 1?

The input will be on line two. The output of that program, if you entered the correct password is the following:
Written in DroidEditor
Password: -- this is due to you using print. If you want it on the same line, use write("Your text here")
********
Password Accepted

This is not correct. He sets the cursor position after the print. It should use the same line.

Meh, write is easier ;)/>

I am trying to build a banking system that takes withdrawled money for a balance file located /disk/bal I keep getting a error

Heres the code
write ("Please enter the amount of money you would like to withdraw: ")
local money = tonumber(read())
for dont=1. money do
tFile = fs.open('/disk/bal', 'r')
current = tFile.read()
tFile.close()
hFile = fs.open('/disk/bal', 'w')
hFile.write(tonumber(current) - tonumber(read()))
hFile.close()
end

Error is
withdraw:5: attempt to call nil

Please someone help me fix this. Remember though it has to store and read the balance amount from a floppy disk.

try replacing

current = tFile.read()

with
current = tFile:read()

that should fix it.

I'm not done with the website yet, but please put your idea for a topic in the comments.

Who are you using for the website? I think, since i'm doing something with a website, i might start doing a daily/weekly exercises for the coders, weekly, of course, being more difficult. don't steal mah idea D:

As for yours, you could have prizes for the winners maybe. If you run your own server (idk if you do) you can give them a donator rank or something, or you could give them stuff on a server you play on. I'm not sure, as I don't know what you have available, nor what you're willing to give away.

I think that's a great idea for a community activity. I had a similar idea for a daily/weekly computercraft program excersize, similar to an activity i found on another community's website. I think that this'll be pretty successful.

rednet.set ("423")

I second this motion!

#23825 Has pastebin messed up?

Posted by Zalerinian on 06 August 2012 - 01:24 AM in General

I've been trying several time to make code for an auto-updater for a program, but each time it fails because it can't read the data to write to the file. I looked on the wiki for how to properly use the http api to do this, and i use the exact example on the http.request page, and it too got an error on writing to a file.

My question to everyone is, do custom pastebin functions/code still work? Even the example one from the wiki, does it work for you?

Here it is, if you're wondering. And yes, the link on pastebin does exist, but i can't write the file.

http.request("http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=Tk19jv43")
requesting = true
while requesting do
   local event, url, sourceText = os.pullEvent()
   if event == "http_success" then
	 respondedText = code.readAll()
	 print(respondedText)
	 requesting = false
   else
	 print("Server didn't respond.")
	 requesting = false
   end
end

#23749 [solved] rednet.send() returning an error

Posted by Zalerinian on 05 August 2012 - 06:52 PM in Ask a Pro

View PostRsstn, on 05 August 2012 - 06:43 PM, said:

I'm using the code below as a basic start for a program which will return the id of a computer when it receives a message from the host computer (with an ID of 6).

rednet.open("right")
local id, msg = rednet.receive()
if id == 6 then
one = os.getComputerID()
rednet.send(6, one)
end

The idea is that the host computer can receive the id of the receiving computer for use in another program.
Only problem is, I'm getting the 'rednet:350: string expected' error, and can't work out what is wrong.
I've looked at any other examples of the get ID command and rednet sending commands, and can't see any difference to my code.
Even after around 2 hours of experimentation, I've had no luck. So...

Any ideas as to what is wrong here?
Thanks in advance, Rsstn.

Thats a nice simple code, but you error is on line 4.

This
one = os.getComputerID()

should be this
one = os.computerID()

You can find it on the wiki

#23747 No Disk Drive Allowed!

Posted by Zalerinian on 05 August 2012 - 06:47 PM in Ask a Pro

That can't be done on a server, unless you're the server operator. You'll need to modify the shell file inside of the ROM folder, which cannot be edited inside of the game. Another way to stop disks is to simply surround the computer in any material on all sides except for one so that you can use it, but you can't put a disk drive on it.

If you need a disk drive, however, then put it on one of the sides that is inaccessible without breaking a block, preferably protected ones.

Great job on this, it'll make testing things significantly easier.

I do have a question though... How did you setup the save system?

For some reason, my save directory is located here:

Quote

C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\Object Desktop\DeskScapes\Saves\computer\

I assume that isn't supposed to happen? What i think it may be is the last directory used by a certain type of window for selecting files, because there are at least 3 different one on Windows where the layout is different (One that looks like the normal file explorer, one that looks more like XP's, and then one that is a vertical list of all the files.)

Great job otherwise, I'll test this on my Linux install later if i get the time.

#17314 [Question] Make a program permanently un-editable?

Posted by Zalerinian on 30 June 2012 - 05:30 PM in Ask a Pro

Hello,

I'm making a program and i need it to be as secure as possible. If disk boot was not a factor, is there a way to make a file permanently un-editable? I managed to make it un-editable for a little, as in you try to edit ti and it throws an error, but then it will open to be edited if you input the edit command again. Is there any way to fix this to make it so it will still won't be editable after the first time?

EDIT: I fixed it myself, nevermind.
