Well, this post is ~1 year old so the Screenshots could have "died".

Well, there were screenshots but as you said, they probably died. I will remaster all of my programs one day and then we'll have new screenshots but for now, no screenshots. You also won't really use this program because it was more like a proof of concept thing. I am currently waiting for oeed to release Silicia...

Maybe you can use MediaWiki or another Wiki software. Users would be able to edit every page you allow them to and you can control changes thanks to the version history of every page. Furthermore you can change the design of the Wiki that it looks like your main site.

Here is my review for the current version.
I'm sorry if I'm being harsh, but an OS, even in an alpha state, should have some functionality.

Pros:
- Good installer
- Good interface
- Cool file viewer concept (like Total Commander)
- No errors
- Options (but only change background color)

Cons:
- 1/5 of it is implemented, these things aren't implemented at all:
First icon on the desktop
First, third and fourth icon in the settings menu
1. Add application in the application settings menu (shows a non-functional interface)
2. Delete and list application in the application settings menu
3. All actions in the file viewer except exit
- 4. No multitasking at all (even multishell would be better)
- 5. No functionality at all
- 1. Can't add applications
- 6. Shell doesn't clear the screen
- 7. Cursor keeps blinking after closing shell or file viewer
- 8. Time doesn't update (add a timer?)
- 3. File viewer doesn't show difference between files and folders
- 3. Can't run scripts from the file viewer
- 9. NDF-OS clone with multiple screens (I'm getting so tired of these NDF-OS clones)

Why did you choose to release this OS in such an unfinished state?
Anyways, I hope it gets better with updates.

Thank you for your feedback. Let me answer to every contra point. I numbered your points for better overview.
  • Add application should normally work. Could you please explain what's not working? Notice that added applications will be shown after the next reboot.
  • Coming in today's update.
  • The file viewer is just temporary. It is my unfinished CCC. Later this week there will be an own file manager for the operating system.
  • Coming in a later update.
  • What would be functionality for you? The sense of a ComputerCraft OS is basically to launch applications and that's what KreOS 3.0 can do.
  • Fixed in today's update.
  • Fixed in today's update.
  • Fixed in today's update.
  • I actually don't think so because it is quite different.
Thank you again for your feedback. Today's update is coming at 6:00 PM CET (UTC+002).

#211065 ComputerCraft mixed with Raspberry Pi

Posted by kornichen on 26 March 2015 - 02:16 PM in General

Don't know if that is exactly what you want but I wrote this some time ago. It is about how to connect a Raspberry Pi with CC via Internet.

View Postkornichen, on 31 January 2015 - 03:09 PM, said:

That might be possible using PHP scripts and a lua, python, bash script or whatever on your Raspi.
Just take yourself a web server with MySQL and PHP. Then, write a script on the Raspi that is sending a request with a folder list each time the folder content changes (A Cron Job would be useful to check that). You can now use another PHP script to get the folder content from the database to your CC computer. Do just the same to transfer files.
Attention: Do not ask for new files to often because your database may be overloaded if you do a database request every second. I think five to ten seconds would be fine.

This article in my blog might be interesting, too.

#210837 User Name Origin/Backstory

Posted by kornichen on 24 March 2015 - 02:40 PM in General

My username as it is kornichen is based on my surname. Originally it was körnchen because some people called me that in primary school. Körnchen is basically my surname plus the German diminutive ending on chen. At some point I tried to register somewhere and noticed that nearly no service supports German umlauts in names so I changed it to kornchen by replacing ö with o. Later I added the i between n and c because it is easier to pronounce. Good about that username: I was never trying to register somewhere where that username was already taken. Contra: In German it sounds really stupid, don't really know how it would be pronounced in English but I think that might be stupid, too.

#208504 Krist - Minable currency that works across servers (paste updated)

Posted by kornichen on 07 March 2015 - 10:34 AM in Programs

It don't know whether the plan was to only use this with ComputerCraft or not but I think a Bukkit plugin would be great. With a Bukkit plugin, even vanilla servers could use this and give their users the possibility to trade in Krist or to convert Krist to another ingame currency (but not vice versa). That would make Krist more popular. I would like to write a Bukkit plugin if I am not planning in the wrong direction.

#206230 ComputerCraft Commander - Norton Commander styled file manager

I like this - big NC user back in the day. I have a couple pieces of feedback for ya...

Mouse selection in each pane (and for the button bar) would be a nice addition.

Would you consider clearing the screen on exit? Right now the exit isn't very elegant. (I don't remember what NC did on exit)

Thanks for this :)

Thank you for the feedback.
Mouse support is planned.
The original NC by the way exited just to the shell with a little ascii symbol window saying something like "Thanks for using Norton Commander". I could implement that even if it is not very useful, it might make CCC a little bit more like NC.

Well, I can confirm that it isn't the first, but it may be the first one done in color for ComputerCraft. You may want to re-think the color scheme though, that green-on-blue is very low contrast. It would probably be easier to read with white text.

Yes, I already thought about that. I used this color scheme because it looks more like the original Norton Commander but I am already working on a menu where you can change the color scheme.

ComputerCraft Commander

Maybe Not the first two-columned file manager

What is this?
The ComputerCraftCommander is maybe the first two-columned file manager for ComputerCraft. It is orientated at Norton Commander which is a file manager for DOS. The design is not the most beautiful but it should look like the original Norton Commander.

How does this work?
It is quite simple: You have to columns. You can change between these two columns with TAB. Use the arrow keys to move up and down. Press F5 to copy a file from the active column to the inactive column. Press F6 to move a file from the active to the inactive column. You can give it a new file name while using this. Press F7 to create a new folder. Press F8 to delete the selected file or folder. Press F10 to quit. You can also type "exit" and press return to quit.

Screenshot?
Yes, Sir.

Download?
Likewise, Sir.

Pastebin: iwxXem48
pastebin get iwxXem48 ccc

Feedback is always desired.

#203904 How to use printers from software side

Posted by kornichen on 23 January 2015 - 03:41 PM in Tutorials

This tutorial will show you, how to use from the software side. As you will see, it is quite simple.

Connect the printer and start a new Page

The first thing, we are going to after putting a printer on side of a computer is to connect the printer. You do it like this:

local printer = peripheral.wrap("left")

This line of code defines a new local variable called printer which we will use to communicate with our printer in the program. Change "left" with the side that you have connected your printer to.
Next is to start a new page. You have to do this once before you print something or after you ended a page (more about that later).

Attention: To get more information about how to wrap a peripheral, take a look at this tutorial.

local success = printer.newPage()

The local variable success is either set to true if a new page was created successfully or false if that was not the case. False might be the output if there is no paper left in the printer. I would recommend to use the following commands in an if-statement as you can see in this tutorial. If you don't do this the program might cancel because of an error that occurs while for example trying to print on a non-existing piece of paper.

Print something

Now, let's print something. It is as easy as it could be:

if success then
  printer.write("Hello world!")
end

Important is the second line. That is the line where the magic happens. The line that we use to print out something. If you want to print out more text, just put more of these commands between line 2 and line 3. That means, you can extend it like this:

if success then
  printer.write("Hello world!")[/size][/size][/size][/size]
[size=5][size=4][size=5][size=4]  printer.write("Hallo Welt!")[/size][/size][/size][/size]
[size=5][size=4][size=5][size=4]  printer.write("¡Hola mundo!")
end

Attention: You do not have to put the write lines into an if-statement. It is just to prevent the program from running into an error.

Ending a page

If you are done with printing something on a page and you want to release it from the printer to make it possible for the user to take the paper out of the printer, use this command:

printer.endPage()

Now the page will be put to the output slot of the printer ready to take it out.

Attention: If you want to print more, you firstly have to start a new page as you learned earlier in this tutorial.

The cursor - move the text around

It is boring and quite useless to put text always into the first line. You have to move the cursor around to print text elsewhere.

printer.setCursorPos(1, 2)

This line will set the printer's cursor to character 1 of line 2.
There is also the possibility to get the position of the cursor. For example for control purposes:

local x, y = printer.getCursorPos()

The cursor position will in this case be stored in the local variables x and y.

The page's title

To find the page you are looking for faster, you can set a page title. As always, it is done with one line of code:

printer.setPageTitle("Hello World!")

Supervise the hardware

There are to commands making it possible for you to supervise both the ink status and the paper status.
To let the program know how much ink there is left in the printer use this command:

local inkLevel = printer.getInkLevel()

The current ink level will be in this case stored in the local variable inkLevel.
To get the current paper level, so the amount of paper in the printer, use this command:

local paperLevel = printer.getPaperLevel()

The current paper level will be in this case stored in the local variable paperLevel.

#203902 Your Thoughts: Windows 10

Posted by kornichen on 23 January 2015 - 03:06 PM in General

As I am using Windows 10 since it has been released as a Technical Preview on my main maschine I have to admit that it is good. Yes, it is good. The start menu, the way they moved Windows apps onto the desktop. It is just fine. After Windows 8 I personally never believed that Microsoft would be able to do something right. I also do use Linux a lot. I use it to develop applications, compile my programs or for gaming as far as it is possible. Sadly it is not normal that every game gets released for Linux which is the only reason why I am still using Windows. Sure, it could use Mac OS but I do not accept to pay too much money for a computer just to have a special operating system running on it. For the things I do, Linux is by far the best operating system but I often forget this while using Windows. Not to get me wrong: Windows 10 is great but not for me. For me it is just the only way to play games. Not more. Windows 7 did this, Windows XP did this.
I think Microsoft is wasting time. They should stop messing around with their store and apps and get back to what Windows is: An operating system for people who want to play games or work in an office. There are already Android and iOS for people who want to use a tablet to surf on the internet etc. If Microsoft realizes what Windows is, they might make it better again. I think, they are at the point now, where they realize this.

Part of my thinks that the current way we are interacting with computers will disappear sooner or later.

I have to agree with you but I can only say: Hopefully it won't change. Image, you are sitting in an office working with Excel while touching around on your computer. I hope the way we are using computers will never disappear. Instead they should improve the way we use computers. I think Microsoft's try to implement an AI into a desktop system might be the right way to go. If they always remember that, we will be on the right way.

TMNT IV Sewer Surfin' is also quite nice (https://www.youtube....H-lLbHbG-A&hd=1).
The trip world world 1 theme is absolutely perfect. The game is also very good (I played it in emulator; it is so difficult to get a cartridge for under 100€).
Also good are these:

I am not the friend of Windows but you know the problem; Linux is not good for gaming (I use it just for coding) and Mac machines are too expansive.

And my start menu:

I am not quiet sure why Windows 10 always sets my keyboard layout to ENG. It just happens from time to time.
